A bomb exploded near the BJP’s office in Bangalore this morning, injuring 16 people, including 11 policemen and two teen girls. The blast occurred around 10.30 AM when the BJP office is normally brimming with party workers and candidates, especially with assembly elections less than three weeks away.

1:01 pm: Karnataka Police DGP Lalrokhuma Pachau says, "Maximum impact on a motorcycle and a van."

12:59 pm: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs RPN Singh says, I appeal for peace. Please do not indulge in rumour mongering."

12:45 pm: Sources say IED was used in Bangalore blast.

Here are the 10 big developments in the case:
  1. Sources said that the police are examining the hard disk of a closed circuit television camera (CCTV) recorder at the BJP office and that footage has captured a person with suspicious movements.

  2. Police sources said that 2 kg of grade one explosives were used in the blast. Intelligence sources have said the bomb was an Improvised Explosive Device or IED, but it is not yet clear how it was triggered.

  3. Police said the bomb appeared to have been placed on a motorcycle with the Tamil Nadu registration number - TN 22R 3769, which was parked outside the BJP office around 10:15 am.

  4. A large fire followed the explosion. Several vehicles including a van of the State Reserve Police were gutted. Windows of buildings nearby were shattered.

  5. Karnataka’s Home Minister R Ashok, who is also the deputy chief minister, has described the blast as "terrorist activity" and said BJP workers were the target.

  6. Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said the Centre will begin an inquiry into the incident. When asked if this could be described as a terror attack, he said that would be known only "after the probe was completed."

  7. A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has expertise in handling terror attacks, has inspected the site. A team from the National Security Guard’s (NSG) bomb data squad is also at the site.

  8. State elections are scheduled in Karnataka for May 5. Today is the last day for candidates to file their nomination papers for the state elections, so a police van was posted outside the BJP office in Malleshwaram.

  9. Moments after the blast, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed tweeted, "If the blast near BJP’s office in Bangalore is a terror attack, it will certainly help the BJP politically on the eve of election." The BJP condemned the remarks and said they were "unfortunate and condemnable".

  10. The Congress has distanced itself from Mr Ahmed’s comments. Minister of State for Home RPN Singh, said, "In matters relating to terror attacks, no political capital should be extracted."

A blast outside the  BJP’s office in Bangalore left cars parked there gutted.  Officials at the spot  described the explosion as "low-intensity" that may have been caused by a cylinder in one of the cars.

Cars parked at the office in the Malleswaram area of Bangalore, a crowded residential neighbourhood, were gutted in the blast.

Because elections in Karnataka are scheduled for May 5, a police van was parked near the BJP office, and men inside were injured, said sources.

A bomb disposal squad is at the location, and the fire was reported under control at 11.40 am.

"One only hopes that it is an accident and not an act by terrorists or political activists," said BJP leader Balbir Punj to news agency ANI.
