Manipal, April 18: The third of a series of training workshops in the country on global food borne and infectious enteric diseases concluded here at Fortune Inn Valley View on Wednesday. These workshops began in 2011.  Two of them have already been conducted at Kolkata (NICED) and Chennai (Guindy) and the third one was hosted by the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology KMC-IC, Manipal University between April 15 and 16, 2013.

Dr Mamatha Ballal, Prof and Head of the Department while welcoming experts and participants to the workshop expressed her gratitude to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and WHO for providing the platform to conduct the training program at the national level.

 “Food borne infections and other enteric diseases are an unnecessary burden on our society and are preventable. Hence the objective of these Global Foodborne infectious Network (GFN) training workshops is to “train the trainers” and is a continuous process,” said Ms Sharon Daves Deputy director, global disease detection regional center-India, division of NCDC.

Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal University was the chief guest of the inaugural function. He emphasized the importance of these workshops where it was possible to give quick information not only to the epidemiologists but also to the health officers through the diagnostic microbiology laboratory. Dr Ballal said that such hands on workshops would definitely help in bringing down the morbidity and mortality associated with food borne infections .

Also present on the occasion were, Dr K Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor, Dr Surendra Shetty the Pro Vice Chancellor of Mangalore Campus and the Registrar Dr G K Prabhu.

The team of experts who participated in the workshop as trainers from different parts of the world were; Dr Barbara Mahon from CDC, Atlanta, Dr James Flint, epidemiologist, Public health agency, Canada, Dr  K N Arun Kumar, Surveillance Medical Officer, WHO-India, Dr Mayank Dwivedi, CDC-India, Dr Biswaranjan  Dash, Epidemiologist from National Center for Disease Control, New Delhi, Dr Vijeta , Microbiologist , NCDC, New Delhi and Dr T Ramamurthy Deputy Director, national institute of cholera and enteric diseases (NICED) from Kolkata.
