MUMBAI: Three lakh passengers were affected due to BEST buses going off roads in Thane on Thursday.

BEST spokesperson Virendra Bagul said that the transport body runs a total 184 buses, including the ordinary red and the AC buses. "More than three lakh commuters travel daily and they were badly hit due to the Thane bandh on Thursday," he stated.

Bagul further stated that the BEST had incurred damages due to stone pelting on its buses. Stones were pelted at Kopri, Marathon chowk, Kashish Park and near Vandana Talkies. "The protestors also deflated tyres of two buses following which we withdrew all buses from the road in Thane," he said.

The bus services were restored late in the evening and there was no untoward incident on Thursday night, he said. Although there were stone pelting cases in the morning, passengers were not harmed in any of the incidents.

Public transport had come to a complete standstill on Thursday as NCP and Shiv Sena called for a bandh in Thane. Autos and taxis too stayed off roads, inconveniencing lakhs of residents, specially office-goers. MSRTC bus services were also hit.
