Mangalore : In a emotional charged protest gathering of students from different colleges near DC office Mangalore on 22nd June 2013, the protesters urged Authorities to take stringent measures against the rapist of Manipal and provide protection to ladies hostels and other vulnerable places.

Urging the Deputy Commissioner to adopt appropriate measures to avoid such incidents in the future, senate member of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore Abhilash P V said that the safety of women and students was an issue that required priority, and attention ought to be given in this regard.

There are several medical, dental and professional colleges across the city, and students from abroad and other states come here to study medicine and other branches. To ensure their safety and especially that of female students, police personnel should be deputed for night-patrolling around campuses. Protection should be provided to students, especially at night, he said.

Security personnel and wardens in ladies’ hostels, and college authorities should be briefed on how to prevent such incidents in future, he said.

He also urged the police department to ensure immediate arrest of the perpetrators of the gang-rape.

Shruti, a physiotherapy student, said that rather than conducting debates on nationalised news channels on the issue of safety of women in cities, strict action should be taken by the authorities to ensure protection for women.

A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.
