Buses should install GPS by Dec 31: DC

Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav has said that all the buses plying in the district should install Global Positioning System (GPS) by December 31. Speaking at a meeting, he said that the installation of GPS would help in checking traffic violations, route diversion and cancellation, overspeed, time management by the buses. Route diversion and cancellation of some buses cause severe inconvenience to the public. He urged RTO and police to convene a meeting of bus owners on the installation of GPS.

Mosque saves over 15,000 gallons of water in a month

Dubai: A huge amount of water has been saved from one Dubai mosque after self-stopping taps were installed in the ablution area. The consumption of water dropped by more than 15,000 gallons of water in one month — an overall saving of 30 per cent. German bathroom fixtures company, Grohe, donated 20 self-closing mixers to the Abu Hamed Al Gazali Mosque in Dubai and recorded instant water savings compared to a similar period the year before.

Qatar would ’welcome’ Israel in 2022

DOHA // Qatar would let Israel take part in a World Cup on their territory despite not recognising the Jewish state, the head of the Gulf nation’s bid to stage the 2022 event said yesterday. Such an invitation would be unprecedented in the Arab world, in which most countries shun Israel. Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, said the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the world’s most watched sporting event.

Krishna defends denial of VISA to Musharraf

Mandya (Karnataka),Dec 3 (PTI) India today said time was not conducive to grant visa to former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to visit the country. "Time is not conducive at this point of time to grant visa to the former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf. The government, after weighing all options and taking into consideration various issues, took a decision to deny the visa", External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told reporters here.

Govt may quash steep airfare hikes

Domestic flights during the forthcoming Christmas- New Year period could surge to a staggering Rs 35,000 one way, airlines have warned. Reacting to a public outcry over a sudden surge in domestic airfares last month, civil aviation minister Praful Patel had ordered domestic airlines to inform aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA) of their proposed price bands. Patel is unlikely to be amused by the result.

Rs 10 gets man stabbed in neck

PANAJI: A 30-year-old man was stabbed in the neck while he was asleep by an acquaintance for non-payment of a debt ofRs10, but survived the attack luckily. Investigations by Bicholim police revealed that Vakil Yadav was stabbed by Bechan Sahani, 32, on Saturday night. Yadav was admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition and was operated upon on Sunday.

MANGALORE: Degree and postgraduate students of autonomous colleges under Mangalore University, who will be completing their courses in 2010-11 and onwards, will get degree certificates as per the regulations and scheme of examinations of the university and not according to those of . colleges.

BEVERLY HILLS: Items from Michael Jackson’s stage wardrobe, including one of the King of Pop’s famous gloves, attracted furious bidding at an auction of celebrity memorabilia in Beverly Hills. Julien’s Auctions says a lone glove worn by Jackson during the "Bad" tour in the late 1980s sold for $330,000 at the "Icons & Idols" auction Saturday night. A jacket signed by Jackson brought in $96,000 and a fedora he wore on stage went for $72,000 at the Julien’s Auctions event.

Iran declares nuclear ’self-sufficiency’ ahead of talks

TEHRAN: Iran said Sunday it has produced a first batch of uranium yellowcake, the raw material for enrichment, insisting the new step "strengthens" its position in upcoming talks with world powers on its controversial nuclear programme. Atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi said that having previously been obliged to import yellowcake from abroad, Iran was now "self-sufficient" in the entire nuclear fuel cycle.

PIA jet with 160 on board fired upon in Karachi

A Pakistani passenger jet, carrying around 160 people, was fired upon just as it was about to land in Karachi but the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely, averting a major tragedy. According to officials, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Multan to Karachi, was cruising in to land at the Karachi airport on Saturday night when it was fired upon while passing over the Malir area which is close to the airport.

Police only competent authority to investigate offences: Karnataka Governor

BANGALORE: Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj virtually questioned the judicial probe ordered by the Yeddyurappa government into alleged land scams, saying that police was the only competent authority to investigate any offences. "The only forum competent to investigate offences is police. Nobody else has the power. Lokayukta has a police, the government has a police. Wherever there is a crime, it may be investigated by the police," he said while citing a Supreme Court ruling when asked by reporters about the judicial probe.

Tu-154 plane commander survives jet accident

The plane commander of the Tupolev Tu-154 jet skidded of the runway at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport during an emergency landing has survived, the head of Dagestan Airlines said on Saturday. The flight №372 departed for the southern Russian city of Makhachkala from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport at 2.07 pm Moscow Time (11.07 GMT). Several minutes after the take-off the crew members reported that all three engines of the plane had failed.
